I have been barbering since 2003. Prior to that I was a qualified hairstylist in Tauranga. I got into hairdressing when I finished school in 1997. Hairdressing gave me a great foundation to my barbering career.
I moved to Wanaka for the ski season. While I was there, I had the opportunity to work at Ali Babas Barbershop. A year later I was still in Wanaka and the owner of Ali Babas. As the barbershop continued to get busier I needed trained staff. Back then barbers were as rare as hen’s teeth. To alleviate this issue I completed my National Certificate in Barbering in 2009 and started training apprentices to become qualified barbers.
I also started working with HITO as a barbering assessor. I eventually became a barbering technical advisor and regular contributor to the Forma magazine. Having the opportunity to work with the HITO team to make improvements to barbering training has been a highlight of my career.
I am excited to be a part of Barbercraft as it will be a great chance to meet other barbers passionate about the industry and to see NZ barbers show off their skills.
